The Boy Who Sold His Bike to Save His Mom

Leo was twelve years old, and he had one big love in his life — his red bike.

He rode it every single day after school. It made him feel free.

His dad had given him the bike before he passed away. So it was very special to Leo.

One evening, Leo came home and found his mom lying on the couch. Her face was pale and her hands were cold.

“Mom, are you okay?” he asked. She gave him a weak smile.

“I’ll be fine,” she said. But Leo could see she was not fine at all.

He found a paper on the table. It was a list of medicines from the doctor.

Leo looked at the prices. His eyes went wide.

The total was more than his mom had.

He checked the money jar in the kitchen. It was almost empty.

Leo sat on his bed and stared at his red bike by the wall. He thought for a long time.

He knew what he had to do. But it hurt his heart to think about it.

The next morning, Leo woke up early. He cleaned the bike until it shone like new.

He rode it slowly to the neighborhood. He put up a small sign that said, “Bike for sale.”

A man named Mr. Cruz stopped and looked at it.

“How much?” he asked.

Leo told him the price. Mr.

Cruz nodded and pulled out the money.

Leo held the bike one last time. He whispered, “Bye,” and let it go.

He walked straight to the pharmacy. He bought every medicine on the list.

When he got home, his mom saw the bag of medicine. Her eyes filled with tears.

“Leo, how did you get this?” she asked softly.

He sat next to her and held her hand. “I sold the bike, Mom.”

She pulled him close and hugged him tight. She cried and so did he.

“Your dad would be so proud of you,” she whispered in his ear.

Leo smiled through his tears. He felt something warm inside his chest.

He had lost his bike. But he had done the right thing.

Over the next few weeks, his mom got better. She was able to stand, cook, and laugh again.

One afternoon, she called Leo outside. There was a bike on the porch — not red, but blue.

“I saved a little each day,” she said. “It’s not the same, but it’s yours.”

Leo touched the blue bike slowly. His eyes were wide and bright.

It was not his dad’s bike. But it came from his mom’s love.

He got on and rode down the street with a big smile on his face.

Some things you give up. But love always finds a way to give back.
