The Boy Who Carried a Stranger Two Miles to Save a Life

It was a hot Tuesday afternoon when Marcus left school early.

He had a headache and just wanted to get home fast.

He took the back road through the woods like he always did.

It was quiet there, and nobody ever walked that way.

But that day, something was different.

He heard a low groan coming from the side of the road.

He stopped and looked down into the ditch.

An old man was lying there, his leg bent the wrong way.

His face was pale and covered in dirt.

Marcus ran down to him fast.

“Hey! Can you hear me?” Marcus said.

The old man opened his eyes slowly and nodded.

“My bike hit a rock,” the man whispered. “I think my leg is broken.”

Marcus looked around. There was no one else in sight.

He pulled out his phone. No signal.

Not even one bar.

The nearest hospital was two miles away.

Marcus bit his lip. He was only fifteen years old.

He was not big for his age, and the man looked heavy.

But he could not just leave him there.

“I’m going to carry you,” Marcus said. “Okay?”

The man looked at him with wide eyes. “You can’t do that, son.”

“Watch me,” Marcus said quietly.

He helped the man up carefully, trying not to move the bad leg too much.

Then he got under the man’s arm and lifted.

The first few steps were the hardest.

Marcus grunted and his knees shook a little.

But he did not stop.

He kept his eyes on the road ahead and just kept walking.

The sun beat down on his back like a heavy hand.

Sweat dripped into his eyes, but he did not wipe it away.

The man tried to hop on one foot to help.

“You’re a good kid,” the man said between breaths.

Marcus just nodded. He needed all his air for walking.

After one mile, Marcus’s legs burned like fire.

His back ached and his arms felt like rubber.

He thought about stopping, just for a minute.

But then the man let out a small cry of pain.

And Marcus kept going.

After what felt like forever, he saw the big white sign of the hospital.

He walked through the front doors and called out, “Help! This man is hurt!”

Nurses rushed over with a wheelchair right away.

Marcus finally let go and fell against the wall, breathing hard.

A nurse put her hand on his shoulder. “Did you carry him here?”

Marcus nodded, too tired to speak.

She stared at him. “From where?”

“Back road,” he said. “About two miles.”

The room went quiet for a second.

The old man grabbed Marcus’s hand from the wheelchair.

“My name is George,” he said. His eyes were wet.

“I’m Marcus,” the boy said with a small smile.

“Marcus,” George said softly, “you saved my life today.”

Marcus looked down at his worn-out shoes and shrugged.

“I just did what anyone would do,” he said.

But deep down, he knew that was not quite true.

Not everyone would stop. Not everyone would carry a stranger two miles.

Marcus did. And that made all the difference.
